Volunteerism

Volunteering has become a meaningful activity for all ages: youth, adults in the work force, and retirees. Research proves the positive rewards of doing for others. Also, finding meaningful activity through volunteerism greatly contributes to an older person's ability to age well. The delay of retirement, and the return and staying power of women in the work force have contributed to the decline in volunteer numbers. The need for volunteers of all ages continues. Older volunteers, with their experience, may rise to the leadership within nonprofit organizations whose programs/activities depend on voluntary help. Volunteerism has been embodied in the U.S. since the early days of barn raisings & quilting bees. Volunteers are needed in our church - please give us a call today - 342-3197!

Did you know that First United Methodist has a Visitation Ministry?

This ministry visits those who are in the nursing home, and those who are homebound, once a month. Would you be interested in spending about 15 minutes of your time once a month to visit someone from our church? We will have an informational/training meeting for current visitors and for anyone else who might be interested on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Please contact Mary
Runge or Judy Geer at for more information about this meeting or to be a part of the Visitation Ministry.

May 23 - Reminder to those who have paid: Train ride to Kewanee for Breakfast! Join us Wednesday, May 23 for a trip to Kewanee's "Train Station" restaurant! After eating, we'll head back to the "Burg"! (No more reservations, please. You may make arrangements on your own, however.) May Dinner Delight Movie: "The Princess Diaries"

FIRSTS’ SUMMER ADVENTURES

For those 60+ (including spouses or dates), you are invited for our annual summer fun at Lake Storey, Pavilion #1 (cost to be decided): 9 a.m. Breakfast Wednesday, June 20, 9 a.m. Breakfast Wednesday, July 18, 6 p.m. Ice Cream Social Wednesday, August 15 - If you need a ride for one of these, please call the office or Steve Fawer.

ATTENTION AARP MEMBERS

AARP has a discount program for eye exams with participating optometrists. Exams are $45.00. There is a 30% discount on glasses and 10% discount on contact lenses. The participating vendors are: J.C. Penney, Pearl Vision, LensCrafters, Sears, and Target. If you are using an optometrist with one of these companies, check to see if they accept the AARP discount.

DINNER DELIGHT MEAL

Every 1st & 3rd Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. We begin at 4:30 p.m. with
a movie, book, etc. and you are welcome to come early & join in the fun before we eat! (Shop the Pink Boutique at Dinner Delight from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.!) Cost of meal is $7.
